What is Google Earth:  

Google Earth is an online application that allows users to virtually view the world in several different aspects.

 

Where did it come from:

Google Earth was originally called earthviewer and developed by a company called Keyhole Inc in 2001. A few years later it was bought out by Google and converted into what you now know as Google Earth. Today you are using version 5.2.1.1588

 

Google Earth Subjects:

Earth- view oceans, continents, cities, states, buildings, and much more

Sky- take a look at the varying constellations

Moon- satellite images of craters and moon landings

Mars- explore the volcanoes and craters

 

Google Earth Tools:

Placemark- place a thumbtack on locations you find and save them for later

Polygon- draw a polygon around an area to highlight it

Path- draw a path to show trails, routes, etc.

Record A Tour- as you explore Google Earth, record it to look back on or to share with a friend

Historical Imagery- view older imagery of the earth, explore the past and see how locations have changed over time

Sunlight- see how the sun effects the landscape land looks with different times of the day (sunrise, sunset)

Ocean- view the surface of oceans, and explore underwater terrain

Streetview- 360 degree images at street level, view cities, neighborhoods, etc.

 

Teacher & Student Innovations:

Geography- allows teachers to explain the ideas of borders that can be visualized and explored by the students

 

History- teachers can show students such things as: paths of exploration and expansion while students can use the program to outline the travels of historical figures

 

Science- view natural phenomona such as volcanoes, craters, islands, etc., study the weather and climate of areas around the world

 

Astronomy- study the stars and constellations

 

Art- teach students how to describe different shapes, lands, depths, and the different cultural influences  

 

Math- time, latitude, longitude, measuring distances between points of interest

 

Marine Biology- study the oceans, seas, habitats, track marine animals
